Hint 1: where to look

One square in this courtyard would leave another square with nothing at all able to light it, so the lantern cannot go there.

Look at the violet courtyard that includes the square at row 1, column 4.

Hint 2: the first forced move

A lantern at row 2, column 3 would leave row 1, column 5 with nothing able to light it.

Every lantern and pencil mark comes off and the clock goes back to zero.

The four rules

  1. Every courtyard gets exactly one lantern.
  2. A lantern lights its own square and shines along its row and column until a wall stops it. A courtyard edge does not stop light, and a lantern set on a lit square is dazzled, which is never allowed.
  3. No lantern may shine on another lantern.
  4. Every open square must end up lit.
